DEFINING A DECADE: WHITBREAD RACER ‘FLYER’

Few yachts carry a legacy as significant as SY ‘Flyer.’ Dutch sailor Conny van Rietschoten commissioned her for the 1977–78 Whitbread Round the World Race. Designed by Sparkman & Stephens and built by Royal Huisman, she was made to withstand the most demanding conditions. More than just a competitor, she claimed victory, making Van Rietschoten the first Dutchman to win this legendary event.

After a long and varied career, including time as a training vessel in the U.S., ‘Flyer’ returned to the Netherlands in 2014 for an extensive restoration. In 2015, VMG Yachtbuilders had the privilege of contributing to her refit, helping to preserve this important piece of sailing history.

With her story still inspiring sailors worldwide, ‘Flyer’ remains a true icon of offshore racing.
